Real Madrid have established contact with representatives of Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Spanish club are actively reshaping their defensive options under incoming manager Jose Mourinho, having already secured deals for Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for €20m and Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool on a free transfer.
Mourinho is reportedly seeking one further addition to solidify his backline, and Calafiori has emerged as a potential target. Two Spanish reporters have indicated Mourinho has specifically requested the club pursue the Italian, raising concerns at the Emirates Stadium given Real Madrid’s efficiency in completing transfers.
Calafiori previously expressed a positive relationship with Mourinho despite being sold by the Portuguese manager during their time at Roma. He stated that Mourinho “forged my character and personality” and that they maintain communication. This existing rapport could facilitate a move to the Bernabeu.
Romano detailed that Real Madrid are assessing options at both centre-back and left-back, with current left-back Ferland Mendy facing recurring injury issues. Calafiori’s versatility, capable of playing in both positions, makes him an appealing prospect. Romano revealed that contact with Calafiori’s camp occurred “a few weeks ago” with Real Madrid seeking information on the player.
Despite the interest, Romano acknowledged that Calafiori remains “a very important player for Arsenal.” The 24-year-old joined Arsenal from Bologna for £42m (including add-ons) two summers ago, though his starting position is not guaranteed with Piero Hincapie expected to become a permanent signing from Bayer Leverkusen. Hincapie started in the Champions League final at left-back, with Calafiori remaining on the bench.
Arsenal have previously indicated they have no intention of selling Calafiori, and there has been no indication of a change in stance. However, Real Madrid’s pursuit and Mourinho’s direct interest present a challenge to Arsenal’s resolve. A successful transfer could provide Mourinho with a key defensive reinforcement, while Arsenal would need to identify a suitable replacement for the Italian international.
