Real Madrid are prioritizing the acquisition of Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias as part of a significant defensive rebuild under newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho, according to reports. President Florentino Perez is backing Mourinho with funds to reshape the squad following two trophyless seasons, having already secured the signings of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries.
Mourinho, returning to the club after a 13-year absence, has reportedly requested reinforcements in multiple positions, including two midfielders, a left-back, and two centre-backs. While several high-profile defenders are on Real Madrid’s radar – Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund, Riccardo Calafiori of Arsenal, and Josko Gvardiol of Manchester City – Dias has emerged as the preferred option due to his overall quality and leadership attributes.
Dias, currently in contract discussions with Manchester City, is seen as a more attainable target than Gvardiol, who could command a fee in excess of €100 million. Calafiori’s availability is also complicated by Arsenal’s view of him as a key player, while Schlotterbeck, despite having a €60 million release clause, is not considered a significant upgrade on Real Madrid’s existing options, particularly young defender Dean Huijsen.
Data analytics firm SciSports reportedly rates Dias as a superior candidate to all other options, and a significant improvement on Real Madrid’s current central defensive options. Despite being 29 years old, his age is not considered a deterrent, particularly given the club’s recent signing of 30-year-old Dumfries. Perez and Mourinho are prioritizing immediate success, and Dias is viewed as the player most capable of delivering that.
While Dias would not be a bargain, his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €51.9 million is competitive, and his leadership qualities would fill a void left by departing players. The club is mindful of the volume of business they intend to conduct this summer and must balance quality with financial prudence. The potential acquisition of Dias signals Real Madrid’s intent to re-establish themselves as a dominant force in European football.
