Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has indicated that the future of midfielder Manu Koné at the club is uncertain, potentially hinging on the team’s financial situation following Champions League qualification. Speaking to Radio Uno, Gasperini acknowledged the club’s need to balance its books and suggested Koné could be a casualty if necessary.
The comments came during a wide-ranging interview covering Roma’s transfer plans and overall outlook for the upcoming season. Gasperini emphasized the importance of the club’s owners, the Friedkin family, being present to make swift decisions during the transfer window, which he believes is now truly underway after a period of inactivity due to the World Cup. He stated their presence will be “fundamental” in securing desired players and responding to the enthusiasm of the fanbase, evidenced by strong season ticket sales.
Koné joined Roma last summer and made a significant impact in the first half of the season, though his form dipped somewhat in the second half. However, he recently earned a starting role with the French national team at the World Cup, demonstrating his quality. Gasperini praised Koné’s performances but conceded that the club’s financial constraints, driven by fair play regulations, could necessitate a sale. He expressed hope that reaching the Champions League will provide sufficient financial leeway to retain the player.
In contrast, Gasperini appeared more optimistic about the potential renewal of Paulo Dybala’s contract, stating that discussions would accelerate now that the summer period is over. He also touched on the broader ambition to compete for the Serie A title, acknowledging Inter as the current favorite but highlighting the desire of other clubs, like Milan and Juventus, to strengthen after missing out on Champions League football. Ultimately, Gasperini believes Roma must continue its upward trajectory and consistently qualify for European competition to realistically challenge for the Scudetto.
