Ismael Saibari is facing a fitness battle to be available for Morocco’s World Cup quarter-final against France on Thursday, after picking up a muscle injury during the round of 16 victory over Canada.
The 22-year-old was substituted in the first half of the 3-0 win against Canada, prompting concerns over his availability for the crucial match against Les Bleus. Initial examinations have reportedly indicated the injury is not severe, but his recovery remains uncertain according to multiple reports.
Saibari, who recently secured a move to Bayern Munich, was absent from Morocco’s training session on Tuesday, continuing a rehabilitation program overseen by the national team’s medical staff. His absence leaves a question mark over Morocco’s attacking options against the reigning World Cup champions.
Should Saibari fail to recover in time, Soufiane Rahimi is anticipated to lead the line for Morocco, having already demonstrated his goalscoring ability by netting against Canada after coming on as a substitute. Rahimi’s inclusion would represent a direct replacement for the Bayern Munich-bound midfielder.
Morocco also have concerns regarding centre-back Chadi Riad, who missed the Canada match altogether. Redouane Halhal is on standby to fill in for Riad should the defender not regain fitness in time for the quarter-final.
Saibari has emerged as a key player for Morocco during this World Cup campaign, showcasing his versatility and attacking prowess. He currently plays for PSV Eindhoven, where he has become a regular starter, contributing goals and assists from midfield. The move to Bayern Munich, confirmed prior to the World Cup, is set to take place in the summer transfer window.
Morocco’s unexpected run to the quarter-finals has been a highlight of the tournament, and the team will be hoping to have as many key players fit as possible as they prepare to face a formidable French side. A fully fit squad would significantly boost their chances of progressing further in the competition.
