Saint-Étienne have announced the signing of Hungarian midfielder Aron Csongvai on a contract until 2030. The 25-year-old joins the Ligue 2 club from Swedish side AIK, where he made 52 appearances, scoring four goals and providing four assists during a season and a half with the Stockholm outfit.
Csongvai arrived at AIK in February 2025, having begun his professional career in Hungary with Újpest, featuring in 104 matches for the club. He later spent time at Fehervár, playing 66 games before making the move to Sweden. Throughout his career, he has also featured as a central defender, demonstrating versatility in his defensive role.
“I think I am a team player who wants to quickly create connections on and off the pitch,” Csongvai said in a statement released by Saint-Étienne. Sporting director Loïc Perrin added that Csongvai is a defensive midfielder who will bring power and impact to that sector of the team. He represents the fifth signing for Saint-Étienne under new manager Ian Cathro, following the arrivals of Sohaib Naïr, Jakob Breum, Mamour Ndiaye, and Thierno Ballo.
Saint-Étienne began their pre-season preparations with a 2-2 draw against Biel Bienne, a third-tier Swiss side. They will continue their friendly schedule with a behind-closed-doors match against Servette in Geneva on Saturday. The club’s Ligue 2 campaign begins on August 8th with an away fixture against Sochaux. The acquisition of Csongvai bolsters Saint-Étienne’s midfield options as they aim to challenge for promotion back to Ligue 1.
