Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Joe Scally has stated he will delay making a decision regarding his future until after the upcoming World Cup this summer. The 23-year-old United States international has been with the Bundesliga club for five and a half years, but enters the final year of his contract at Borussia-Park. Scally recently acknowledged his openness to a potential move, fueling speculation about his next destination.
Speaking to Bulinews.com during a virtual media roundtable, Scally admitted a desire to experience a new challenge at some point in his career. “I've been here for a long time,” he said. “I love the club, but it's no secret that I would love to experience something different at some point in my career. I think every player has their wishes and what they want to do.” He emphasized his current focus remains on representing the USMNT at the World Cup, deferring further consideration until after the tournament concludes.
Reports from German outlet Rheinische Post have suggested Scally harbors a particular interest in joining a club in the English Premier League. The full-back joined Mönchengladbach from Major League Soccer side New York City FC in January 2021, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the Bundesliga. He has become a key component of the team, recently becoming the youngest non-German player to reach 150 Bundesliga appearances at the age of 23 years and 116 days, achieving this milestone in a goalless draw against VfL Wolfsburg.
Scally has earned 24 caps for the United States national team, and his performances have consistently drawn attention from clubs across Europe. With only one year remaining on his current deal, Mönchengladbach may face a decision to either negotiate a contract extension or consider offers for the player during the upcoming transfer windows. A strong showing at the World Cup could significantly increase his market value and the number of potential suitors. His departure would leave a void at right-back for the Bundesliga side, while a move to the Premier League would offer Scally the opportunity to test himself in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
