Xaver Schlager is poised to join Nottingham Forest after departing RB Leipzig, with a medical scheduled for this week according to The Athletic. The 28-year-old midfielder will sign a two-year contract with the option of a further year at the City Ground. Forest will not pay a transfer fee as Schlager’s contract with Leipzig expired this summer, despite the Bundesliga club’s attempts to secure an extension.
Schlager’s arrival provides a boost to Forest’s midfield options following the significant sale of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for a reported €135 million earlier in the transfer window. The Austrian international offers experience and a proven track record in European football, addressing a key area of need for the Premier League side. He spent four seasons with RB Leipzig, making over 100 appearances across all competitions and becoming a regular fixture in their squad.
This move also represents a reunion with manager Oliver Glasner, who recently took the reins at Nottingham Forest after leaving Crystal Palace. Glasner previously managed Schlager during their time together at Wolfsburg, where the midfielder established himself as a key player. The familiarity between the two could facilitate a swift integration into the Forest squad.
Schlager began his professional career with Austria Wien before moving to Hoffenheim in 2017. After two seasons in Germany, he joined Wolfsburg and flourished under Glasner's guidance, showcasing his ability to dictate play from midfield and contribute defensively. His transfer to RB Leipzig in 2021 saw him continue to develop, featuring in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Schlager has also earned 23 caps for the Austrian national team, representing his country at major international tournaments.
The addition of Schlager is expected to strengthen Nottingham Forest’s midfield and provide competition for places as they look to build on their Premier League status. His experience and understanding of Glasner’s tactical approach should prove valuable as Forest navigate a challenging season.
