Keven Schlotterbeck has informed FC Augsburg of his desire to leave the club during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a report from Kicker.de. The 29-year-old defender, brother of Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck, is seeking a new challenge after losing his place in the starting eleven towards the end of the recent Bundesliga season.
Schlotterbeck briefly captained Augsburg, but found himself increasingly sidelined as the campaign progressed. Despite the absence of fellow defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw at times, the left-footed centre-back struggled to regain a consistent role in the team. Competition for places from Chrislain Matsima, Cedric Zesiger, and Noah-Kai Banks has made a return to the starting lineup appear improbable.
He joined Augsburg in 2022 from SC Freiburg, where he spent five seasons as a squad player, making over 80 appearances across all competitions. While he has established himself as a reliable Bundesliga performer, Schlotterbeck’s game time at Augsburg diminished significantly in the latter half of the 2023-24 season, prompting his decision to seek a transfer.
Although Schlotterbeck remains under contract with the Bavarian club until 2027, both parties appear to be in agreement that a departure is the most suitable outcome. No potential destination has been reported at this time, but several Bundesliga clubs may be interested in acquiring an experienced defender. Augsburg will likely seek a modest transfer fee for the player, given his current situation and contract length. This move could allow Schlotterbeck to find regular first-team football elsewhere, while Augsburg can free up wages and potentially invest in younger players.
