Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, with the Argentina international agreeing to a four-year contract, according to Fabrizio Romano. The move comes as manager Roberto De Zerbi seeks to overhaul the club’s defensive options following a challenging season where Spurs conceded 57 league goals.
Senesi had a deal in place to join Tottenham previously, contingent on the club maintaining its Premier League status, which they secured on the final day of the season. Concerns arose over a potential bid from Liverpool following the appointment of Andoni Iraola, but Tottenham ultimately secured the defender’s signature.
The arrival of Senesi adds much-needed experience to a young Tottenham squad. He previously played in the Premier League for Bournemouth, giving him immediate familiarity with the league’s demands. The signing addresses a key area of concern for De Zerbi, who is also reportedly interested in Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke.
Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has praised the club’s transfer business so far, highlighting the importance of bringing in players with Premier League experience. Alderweireld believes the signings of Senesi and potentially Van Hecke demonstrate a focus on stability and proven quality, essential for avoiding a repeat of last season’s struggles. He emphasized the need for players with “big hearts” who are committed to improvement and prioritizing the team.
With captain Cristian Romero potentially departing and uncertainty surrounding Micky van de Ven’s future, De Zerbi is actively strengthening his defensive options. The possibility of Van de Ven switching to left-back or featuring in a back three has also been considered, offering tactical flexibility. The addition of Senesi, a naturally left-sided centre-back, alongside a potential move for Van Hecke, would provide a balanced and competitive defensive unit for the upcoming season.
