A divergence in transfer strategy between Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti and club director Damien Comolli is creating tension at the Turin club, according to reports in the Italian press. While both men share a desire to rebuild Juventus’ credibility, they reportedly disagree on the scale and type of reinforcements needed.
Spalletti reportedly made it clear to the club’s leadership in January that a physically and technically strong striker was the priority for the remainder of the season. This request stemmed from uncertainty surrounding Dusan Vlahovic’s recovery from an adductor injury and a general lack of consistent goalscoring threat from the existing forward line. Spalletti publicly voiced his frustration after the match against Lecce, highlighting the need for a decisive attacking presence.
However, Damien Comolli did not fully accommodate Spalletti’s request during the January transfer window, instead bringing in players like Boga, who the manager does not believe significantly address the team’s most pressing needs. This has led to questions about the alignment between the manager and the club’s recruitment policy.
Comolli has publicly stated that he and Spalletti are “completely aligned,” emphasizing a shared vision for an offensive, modern, and fluid style of play. He believes the current squad is solid, evidenced by their average of two points per match, and only requires a few additions to improve and develop younger players. Spalletti, however, is reportedly of the opinion that a more substantial overhaul is necessary to overcome the team’s ingrained issues and return to the Serie A summit.
Spalletti is believed to have requested at least double the number of reinforcements Comolli envisions, including a goalkeeper, two left-footed defenders (potentially more if Bremer departs in the summer), a physical midfielder to support Nicolo Loca and Manuel Thuram, a more technical midfielder in the mold of Bernardo Silva, and a striker. He also reportedly wants experienced, winning players who can guide the younger members of the squad. While Vlahovic’s future remains uncertain, Spalletti has consistently expressed his support for the Serbian striker. A crucial meeting is expected at the end of the season to address these differences and establish a clear path forward for the club.
