Tottenham Hotspur have distanced themselves from a potential move for Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, according to Fabrizio Romano. The update comes amid reports in French media suggesting Arsenal are still considering a controversial transfer for the 24-year-old.
Greenwood enjoyed a successful debut season in Ligue 1, scoring 26 goals and providing 11 assists in 45 appearances for Marseille. This form has drawn attention from several top clubs, including Atletico Madrid and Roma, after he successfully rebuilt his career following a period of off-field issues while at Manchester United.
Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille last summer for a fee of £26.6 million, but retained a 40% sell-on clause, meaning they would profit from any future transfer. L’Equipe reported on Friday that both Arsenal and Tottenham were evaluating moves, noting that Marseille would be reluctant to sell without a substantial offer exceeding his market value due to the existing agreement with United.
However, Romano refuted the Tottenham link with a concise statement on social media: “Tottenham are not working on a deal to sign Mason Greenwood despite reports.”
Arsenal’s potential interest appears less likely given their current squad depth on the right wing, where Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke are established options. The Gunners are reportedly prioritizing strengthening the left side of their attack, targeting players such as Nico Williams and Bradley Barcola.
Furthermore, the difficulties surrounding Greenwood’s past off-field troubles continue to present a significant obstacle to a Premier League return. TEAMtalk’s Fraser Fletcher previously highlighted the reputational risks associated with signing Greenwood, suggesting English clubs are wary of potential supporter backlash and sponsorship concerns, despite his undeniable talent. The case, which involved serious allegations, was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service due to key witnesses withdrawing their cooperation.
As a result, a return to the Premier League appears increasingly improbable for Greenwood, with the controversy surrounding his past likely to continue to overshadow his on-field performances.
