Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing a significant midfield rebuild under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, with talks initiated for Martin Baturina of Como, alongside existing interest in Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali. According to Matteo Moretto, a collaborator of Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have made contact with Como to gather information on a potential deal for the 23-year-old Croatian playmaker Baturina.
This move comes as Tottenham aim to avoid a repeat of last season’s narrow escape from relegation and build a squad capable of challenging for European qualification. The club has already added Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke to their squad this summer, focusing now on strengthening the midfield.
Spurs are reportedly already in advanced discussions with West Ham regarding Fernandes, and are willing to meet both the player’s wage demands and the Hammers’ £80 million asking price. Simultaneously, they are negotiating with Newcastle United for Italy international Tonali, with a potential fee of up to £90 million being discussed. An agreement has reportedly been reached with Tonali over a six-year contract.
Baturina has attracted attention across Europe following a successful season with Como in Serie A under Cesc Fabregas, as well as a notable goal for Croatia against England at the World Cup. However, securing his signature could prove difficult, as Como, having recently achieved promotion to the Champions League, are reportedly reluctant to sell and have placed an €80 million (£69 million) price tag on the player. Interest from Bayern Munich further complicates matters, though their recent signing of Ismael Saibari may reduce their pursuit.
The potential arrival of Baturina could impact the role of James Maddison, who is returning from a long-term ACL injury. Should all three midfielders – Baturina, Tonali, and Fernandes – join Spurs, the total investment would reach a substantial £239 million, demonstrating the club’s ambition and financial commitment. Lucas Bergvall may also be departing, with Nottingham Forest and Napoli expressing interest.
