Strasbourg are considering a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, with the 22-year-old currently undergoing a trial with the Ligue 1 club, according to L’Équipe. The American international has arrived in Alsace and will be assessed by new RCSA manager Hugo Oliveira over several weeks, with a focus on his ability with the ball at his feet.
Strasbourg have already brought in Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders this transfer window, creating competition for the number one goalkeeping spot. However, the club are exploring options to solidify their position between the posts, and Slonina represents a potential solution. While a loan move is currently being discussed, a permanent transfer has not been ruled out should the trial prove successful.
Slonina joined Chelsea in 2022 from Chicago Fire, signing a contract that runs until 2028, but has since been loaned to both Eupen and Barnsley in search of regular first-team football. He has one senior international cap for the United States, earned in 2023. His time at Barnsley saw him make 12 appearances in League One last season, gaining valuable experience in European football.
Chelsea are also looking to move on Danish goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen, who also belongs to the club, and he remains an alternative option for Strasbourg should Slonina fail to impress Oliveira during his trial. The club are keen to find a suitable destination for Jörgensen, and Strasbourg could present an opportunity if their pursuit of Slonina doesn’t materialize. The potential arrival of either goalkeeper would provide Strasbourg with a fresh option in a position they are actively strengthening ahead of the new season.
Slonina’s trial represents a chance for the young American to demonstrate his capabilities and potentially secure a more consistent role in a top-five European league. A successful spell at Strasbourg could be a significant step forward in his career.
