Florian Thauvin has revealed he was overlooked by several French clubs following his return from a spell in Mexico, despite expressing a desire to return to Ligue 1. The RC Lens winger detailed in an interview with Ligue 1+ that he received little interest from clubs such as Lorient and Montpellier, stating that none were willing to offer him an opportunity.
Thauvin specifically mentioned a conversation with former Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin, who reportedly expressed initial openness to a deal but then failed to follow up. According to Thauvin, Nicollin told him he was open to the possibility and appreciated him as a player, but subsequent attempts to contact Nicollin went unanswered.
This revelation comes as Thauvin has become a key player for Lens since joining the club, demonstrating a resurgence in form. Lens have a proven track record of successfully reintegrating players, most recently with the signing of Allan Saint-Maximin, also from Mexico, who has quickly become influential.
Thauvin previously enjoyed a successful career in France with Marseille, winning the Coupe de France in 2016. His move to Mexico with Tigres UANL in 2021 was met with surprise, and his subsequent struggle to find a club upon his return highlights the challenges players can face when attempting to rebuild their careers in Europe. Lens’ willingness to take a chance on Thauvin has proven beneficial for both parties, solidifying their attacking options and providing Thauvin with a platform to showcase his talent.
