Manchester United have officially announced the signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a fee of £35million. The 29-year-old Belgian international has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, arriving after a successful stint with Villa and having recently represented Belgium at the World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals.
United triggered a release clause in Tielemans’ contract to secure his services, adding him to their squad just a day after completing the £50million acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The move for Tielemans has been welcomed by club legend Paul Scholes, though he believes further additions are needed to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts during the 2026/27 campaign, suggesting that the pairing of Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo may not be ideal.
Tielemans joins United having spent the previous three seasons at Aston Villa, having initially moved to Leicester City in 2019. He expressed his delight at joining the club, stating that it is a proud moment and the culmination of years of dedication. He emphasized his desire to achieve further success and contribute to the club’s ambition of winning major trophies.
Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised Tielemans’ technical qualities, ambition, and mentality, believing he will thrive at Manchester United. Wilcox highlighted his consistency and the composure, creativity, and leadership he will bring to the squad. The club views Tielemans as a significant addition, both on and off the pitch, as they continue to build a team capable of challenging for top honours.
Reports indicate that United are not finished in the transfer market, with plans to pursue another big-name midfield signing following the arrivals of Santos and Tielemans. Laurie Whitwell, David Ornstein, and Carl Anka have all provided updates on the club’s ongoing transfer plans.
