Tottenham Hotspur are set to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee of €116 million, according to reports in Italy. The 24-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract with the North London club, keeping him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2032, and will earn approximately €12 million net per year.
The transfer fee will make Tonali one of the most expensive players in Premier League history, surpassed only by Manchester City’s recent acquisition of Elliot Anderson. Newcastle United are set to receive £92.5 million (approximately €107 million) for Tonali’s transfer, plus an additional £7.5 million (just under €9 million) in performance-related bonuses. This sale comes after Newcastle also parted ways with Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for around €80 million.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for a fee of around €64 million, quickly becoming a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield. He made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies, contributing four assists and establishing himself as a regular starter. Prior to his move to England, Tonali spent three seasons with Milan, helping them win the Serie A title in 2022. He has also earned 15 caps for the Italian national team.
Tottenham’s acquisition of Tonali is a significant statement of intent from the club under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs have already secured deals for Marco Senesi, Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka this transfer window, significantly bolstering their squad after a disappointing campaign last season where they narrowly avoided relegation. The arrival of Tonali is expected to provide a considerable upgrade in midfield quality and solidify Tottenham’s ambitions for a top-six finish. To offset the cost of the incoming transfers, Tottenham are also reportedly selling young defender Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for a fee of around €58 million, including bonuses, with the player returning from a loan spell with Hamburg.
