Tottenham Hotspur have been remarkably active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in seven new players as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes the squad following their Premier League survival. The most significant arrival is Sandro Tonali, the 26-year-old midfielder joining from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £100 million, becoming Spurs’ new record signing.
The initial fee for Tonali is reported to be £92.5m, with potential add-ons taking the total to £100m. Tonali, who made 110 appearances for Newcastle after arriving from AC Milan three seasons ago, expressed his immediate desire to join Tottenham, stating he spoke with De Zerbi for close to two hours about the club’s vision.
Alongside Tonali, Tottenham have secured the services of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million, a fee exceeding their previous record signing. Sporting director Johan Lange described Fernandes as a player with “outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity,” while De Zerbi highlighted his composure under pressure. Experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has arrived on a free transfer from Burnley, providing backup in the goalkeeping department, and Jan-Paul van Hecke has joined from Brighton for £52 million after two previous bids were rejected.
Further bolstering the defence, Marcos Senesi has agreed to join from Bournemouth upon the expiration of his contract, bringing with him experience from 128 appearances in the Premier League. Tottenham also secured the free transfer of Andy Robertson from Liverpool, with De Zerbi praising his experience, leadership, and winning mentality. These additions signify a clear intent to strengthen both the spine and depth of the squad.
Outgoings have also taken place, with Luka Vuskovic moving to Brighton for a fee of up to £50 million, despite never making a competitive appearance for Spurs. Radu Dragusin has joined Fiorentina on loan, while Alfie Devine has made a permanent move to Preston North End. Alejo Veliz has moved to Bahia in Brazil, and Yves Bissouma has been released following the expiration of his contract. These departures allow De Zerbi to further refine the squad to his liking. The influx of new talent positions Tottenham to build upon their Premier League survival and challenge for higher positions in the coming season.
