Tottenham Hotspur have been active in the transfer market following the confirmation of their Premier League status and the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as manager. The club has completed several significant signings, headlined by the arrival of midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a reported fee of £100 million, making him the club’s new record signing.
The initial fee for the Italy international is reported to be £92.5m, with potential add-ons taking the total to £100m. Tonali, who made 110 appearances for Newcastle across three seasons after joining from AC Milan, expressed his immediate desire to join Spurs after speaking with De Zerbi for nearly two hours, describing the conversation as “like magic.”
Another substantial outlay saw Tottenham secure the services of 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million. Sporting director Johan Lange lauded Fernandes as a player with “outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity,” while De Zerbi highlighted his composure under pressure and ability to drive the team forward. Fernandes, who has one cap for Portugal, will wear the number 18 shirt.
Further bolstering the squad, experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka joined on a free transfer from Burnley, providing backup in the goalkeeping department. The 37-year-old previously spent time at Manchester United and expressed his excitement about working with De Zerbi and playing for a “huge club.”
Defensive reinforcements arrived with the £52 million signing of centre-back Jan-Paul van Hecke from Brighton. It was a third attempt to sign the player, and Van Hecke was delighted to reunite with De Zerbi, having previously worked with the Italian coach. Marcos Senesi also joined on a free transfer from Bournemouth, adding left-footed defensive options. Senesi made 128 appearances for Bournemouth over four seasons.
The most recent addition is left-back Andy Robertson, who arrived on a free transfer after his contract with Liverpool expired. De Zerbi praised Robertson’s technical qualities, experience, and leadership, anticipating a significant impact both on and off the pitch.
Outgoings have also begun, with young midfielder Alfie Devine completing a permanent move to Preston North End, who broke their transfer record to secure his signature. Striker Alejo Veliz has joined Brazilian side Bahia, while Yves Bissouma has been released at the end of his contract. Tottenham are anticipating further departures, with Radu Dragusin expected to join Fiorentina on loan and Luka Vuskovic likely to move to Brighton.
With the squad significantly reshaped, attention now turns to strengthening the attacking options, with Manchester City winger Savinho identified as a key target.
