Toronto FC sign US striker Josh Sargent in club-record €20m MLS deal
Toronto FC have completed the signing of United States international Josh Sargent from Norwich City in a deal worth approximately €20m (£17m), marking the third-largest transfer in Major League Soccer history. The 26-year-old striker joins as a Designated Player through the 2030 MLS season after three years with the English Championship club.
Sargent scored seven goals in 23 league appearances for Norwich this season, having previously spent three Bundesliga campaigns with Werder Bremen before his 2021 move to England. The Missouri-born forward brings 29 senior caps and five international goals to a Toronto side currently sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference.
The acquisition signals Toronto's ambition to revitalize their attacking options under coach John Herdman, with Sargent telling club media: 'From the first conversations, what excited me most was the ambition to build a competitive, winning team.' His arrival comes amid MLS rivals Orlando City's ongoing pursuit of France star Antoine Griezmann.
As a Designated Player, Sargent's salary will exceed MLS' maximum budget charge, reflecting his status as a marquee signing for the Canadian club. The six-and-a-half-year contract provides long-term stability for a player entering his prime years, while Norwich secures a significant return on their initial €9.5m investment in the striker.
