Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a £60 million bid for Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo, according to reports. The move comes as Liverpool are reportedly open to selling the Netherlands international this summer, despite the recent departure of Mohamed Salah.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool would consider a significant offer for Gakpo, stating an ‘important proposal’ would likely prompt the club to cash in on the player. This is due to Liverpool’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their own winger options, with Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig a key target in a deal valued at £112 million. Discussions are also underway with Bradley Barcola, potentially leading to a combined outlay of nearly £200 million on attacking reinforcements.
Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven, and while he showed initial promise, his form dipped considerably last season. He has made 53 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals. The potential sale is further fueled by reports in the Netherlands suggesting Gakpo is unhappy with the club’s decision to sack Arne Slot, his compatriot and former manager.
Tottenham’s interest stems from a desire to add experience to their squad, alongside recent signings of veteran defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson. They are also pursuing deals for Joao Palhinha and Jan Paul van Hecke, indicating a clear strategy of building a team with Premier League know-how. Savinho, from Manchester City, is also close to completing a £60 million move to Spurs. Gakpo’s arrival would align with this approach, providing manager Ange Postecoglou with a proven Premier League attacker.
The proposed £60 million fee would represent a substantial offer for a player who struggled for consistency last season, and Liverpool would likely accept such a bid given their pursuit of other wingers. The transfer could allow Liverpool to fund their ambitious summer overhaul and provide Gakpo with an opportunity to reignite his career at a new club.
