Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to intensify their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, according to TEAMtalk. The 25-year-old has attracted interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, with both clubs having made enquiries in recent weeks and signalling their willingness to invest in the player.
Van Hecke has been a consistent performer in the Premier League over the past two seasons, establishing himself as a key figure in Brighton’s squad. Tottenham believe they may have an advantage in securing his signature due to Roberto De Zerbi’s potential arrival, as the Italian manager previously worked with Van Hecke at Brighton and is reportedly keen on a reunion.
Sources indicate that Tottenham are anticipating significant changes to their defensive line this summer, with the futures of both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven currently uncertain. The club internally acknowledges that both players are likely to be sold during the transfer window.
Spurs have already agreed a deal in principle to sign Marcos Senesi from AFC Bournemouth, as reported on April 17, and are expecting Luka Vuskovic to return following a successful loan spell with Hamburg. However, further defensive reinforcements are being actively sought, with Van Hecke identified as a standout candidate to strengthen the team.
There is also a broader recruitment strategy in place, with Tottenham reportedly interested in pairing Van Hecke with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen if possible, given their shared history under De Zerbi. Current Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has already agreed to a return to Italy.
While Chelsea and Liverpool remain interested in Van Hecke, Tottenham’s connection with De Zerbi and their planned defensive overhaul could prove decisive, though Premier League survival remains the immediate priority for the North London club. Other potential departures from Tottenham include Richarlison, who has been linked with a return to Everton, and the club is considering a centre-forward from Feyenoord as a potential replacement.
