Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, beating Manchester United to the Portuguese international’s signature. The deal, confirmed by David Ornstein of The Athletic, is for a guaranteed fee of €98 million.
Manchester United had initially shown strong interest in Fernandes, with personal terms not expected to be a barrier. However, West Ham were reluctant to sell, placing a valuation of over €90 million on the 21-year-old. United were unwilling to meet that price, particularly given Fernandes’ recent experience of consecutive relegations with previous clubs.
Tottenham stepped in, demonstrating a willingness to match West Ham’s demands as part of a significant overhaul of their squad. Spurs finished 17th in the league for two seasons running, and are clearly aiming to improve under Roberto de Zerbi, who successfully steered them clear of relegation towards the end of last season. This prompted renewed talks between Manchester United and West Ham, but ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Spurs not only matched West Ham’s financial expectations but also improved upon Manchester United’s contract offer to Fernandes. While reports suggested Fernandes may have preferred a move to Old Trafford to play alongside compatriot Bruno Fernandes, the financial package offered by Tottenham proved decisive. Fernandes becomes Tottenham’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Tottenham are expected to spend over €200 million this transfer window, signalling a shift in approach from the club’s traditionally frugal ownership under Daniel Levy. Discussions are ongoing regarding a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, indicating the club’s ambition to significantly strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. The acquisition of Fernandes represents a statement of intent from Tottenham, demonstrating their commitment to competing at the highest level of the Premier League.
