Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered the competition to sign Viery, a 21-year-old centre-back from Brazilian side Gremio, according to Portal do Gremista. The defender has a release clause of €50 million (£43m), though Gremio are expected to negotiate for a lower fee. Several other clubs are also interested, including Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Benfica, Fiorentina, and Sunderland.
Tottenham have already been active in the summer transfer window, securing the free transfers of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi as they look to improve after consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. The club is also reportedly close to signing winger Savinho from Manchester City and Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, despite having two bids rejected by the Seagulls. Further additions in midfield and attack are also planned.
Viery has established himself as a key player for Gremio under manager Luis Castro this season. He is described as a left-footed, mobile, and aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession. Gremio have already turned down offers of around €12 million (£10.3m) for the player, and recently received an indication of a €15 million (£12.9m) proposal, as well as a potential offer of €17 million (£14.6m) plus €3 million (£2.6m) in bonuses from an unnamed Premier League club.
The arrival of Tottenham, along with Sunderland, could potentially escalate the bidding for Viery, pushing the transfer fee closer to Gremio’s valuation. Scouts from several English and Italian clubs have been attending Gremio matches to assess the defender, highlighting the widespread interest in his signature. This pursuit echoes Tottenham’s earlier move for Souza from Santos in January, demonstrating a willingness to scout and acquire talent from the Brazilian league. Securing a player like Viery would bolster Tottenham’s defensive options as they aim for a significant improvement in the upcoming season.
