Borussia Mönchengladbach are poised to sign Japanese midfielder Zento Uno from Shimizu S-Pulse this summer, according to Absolut Fussball. The 22-year-old, who already captains his club side, is expected to join after the conclusion of the current J1 League season. Should the transfer be finalized quickly, Uno will become the second arrival at Borussia-Park this summer, following the signing of David Herold from Karlsruhe SC.
Uno primarily plays as a defensive midfielder and has earned two international caps for Japan. His potential arrival comes as Mönchengladbach seek to bolster their midfield options, potentially as a replacement for Rocco Reitz, who is moving to RB Leipzig. The club has been actively tracking several midfield targets, indicating a clear need for reinforcement in that area of the pitch.
However, competition for Uno’s signature is present from elsewhere in the Bundesliga, with Borussia Dortmund also reportedly showing interest, as confirmed by Rheinische Post. Dortmund’s pursuit suggests Uno is highly regarded within German football, and Mönchengladbach will need to finalize the deal swiftly to secure his services. The player is right-footed and known for his leadership qualities, having been entrusted with the captaincy of Shimizu S-Pulse at a young age.
Alongside the pursuit of Uno, Mönchengladbach are also reportedly nearing the signing of Hannover 96 captain Enzo Leopold. The potential double acquisition would significantly strengthen the midfield ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign. While the financial details of both deals remain undisclosed, the club appears to be prioritizing strengthening the center of the pitch as they prepare for the upcoming season. Securing both players would provide manager Gerardo Seoane with increased tactical flexibility and depth in midfield.
