Reports in Turkish media suggest Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is considering leaving Anfield at the end of the season, potentially even terminating his contract with the club, with Galatasaray identified as a potential destination. According to Fotomac, the Turkish Super Lig champions have placed the 34-year-old at the top of their list of defensive targets.
However, TEAMtalk advises caution regarding the report, characterizing it as “outrageously speculative.” Van Dijk signed a new contract with Liverpool in April 2025, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2027, and remains a key figure when fit under manager Arne Slot.
The speculation arrives amidst a period of potential change at Liverpool, with winger Mohamed Salah expected to depart and goalkeeper Alisson linked with a move to Juventus. Losing three senior players in one transfer window would represent a significant overhaul for the club.
Despite a less impactful 2025/26 campaign for both the player and the team, Liverpool are believed to still rely on Van Dijk’s leadership qualities in their defence. While Ibrahima Konate is nearing a contract extension, he is not yet considered to possess the same level of commanding presence as the Dutchman. The emergence of young central defenders Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet further highlights the need for Van Dijk’s experience to guide their development.
Recent reports from A Spor also indicate Galatasaray’s interest in Van Dijk, but TEAMtalk maintains that the player is unlikely to be willing to leave Liverpool and sever ties with his current contract. The club has not confirmed any discussions regarding a potential departure for Van Dijk.
