Luka Vušković has indicated he will not be extending his loan spell with Hamburger SV beyond the current season, stating he is “99.9 percent” certain to leave the club. The 19-year-old Croatian centre-back revealed his expectation following HSV’s 3-2 victory over SC Freiburg on Sunday, a match he believes was likely his final appearance at the Volksparkstadion.
Speaking to Kicker after the match, Vušković acknowledged the strong possibility of his departure, describing the game as a “farewell party.” His brother, Mario Vušković, who is currently serving a doping ban but will be available to play again in November, was present in the stadium with their parents, adding to the emotional occasion. Luka Vušković expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the club and contribute to the team’s success.
Since joining Hamburger SV on loan from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, Vušković has become a key player, demonstrating significant impact on both sides of the pitch. He is currently HSV’s joint-top scorer with six goals, level with fellow loanee Fabio Vieira, who is contracted to Arsenal and also expected to return to his parent club this summer. The contributions of both players have been vital for HSV throughout the season.
Hamburger SV coach Merlin Polzin recognized the significance of the moment, substituting both Vušković and Vieira in stoppage time to allow them a final opportunity to acknowledge the supporters. Polzin praised the players' performances throughout the season and expressed confidence in the team’s ability to remain competitive next season despite their impending departures. He stated that the club will be prepared for the challenges ahead, regardless of the loss of two key loanees.
Vušković’s loan spell at HSV has provided him with valuable first-team experience, contributing to his development as a young centre-back. Tottenham Hotspur will now assess his progress and determine his role within the squad for the upcoming season, potentially considering further loan opportunities or integration into the first team.
