Granit Xhaka has publicly stated his intention to remain at Sunderland for the upcoming season, dismissing recent speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea. The Swiss international informed DAZN that he considers Sunderland his “home” and that his family are settled in the city.
Xhaka made a successful return to the Premier League with Sunderland last season, quickly becoming a key player and captaining the side to a seventh-place finish and a Europa League qualifying spot. He contributed one goal and six assists during the campaign, attracting attention from several clubs, including Chelsea.
Chelsea, under new manager Xabi Alonso, were reportedly keen to sign Xhaka, with Alonso having previously worked with the midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen. Initial reports suggested Xhaka was receptive to a return to London, but he has now clarified his position. According to TEAMtalk, Xhaka has directly informed Alonso of his decision to stay at Sunderland.
Sunderland officials were reportedly angered by Chelsea’s approach for their captain, but have since held positive talks with Xhaka, reaffirming his importance to the team. Xhaka acknowledged being appreciative of Alonso’s interest, but ultimately prioritised remaining with Sunderland. He emphasized the importance of family and his happiness at the club as key factors in his decision.
Switzerland’s progress to the quarter-finals of the World Cup occurred while Xhaka was communicating his intentions to Sunderland. His commitment to the Black Cats provides stability to their midfield ahead of their Europa League campaign, and demonstrates a clear loyalty to the project at the Stadium of Light.
