Kerim Alajbegovic is poised to leave Bayer Leverkusen and join Atalanta Bergamo in a permanent transfer worth €25million, plus bonuses, according to reports in Italy. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has reportedly been persuaded to make the move by compatriot Sead Kolasinac, currently playing for Atalanta. The deal represents a significant profit for Leverkusen, who only signed Alajbegovic from RB Salzburg last summer for a fee of €8million.
Alajbegovic enjoyed a productive season with Salzburg in 2023-24, registering nine goals and three assists in 29 appearances across all competitions. This form prompted Leverkusen to secure his services, but the Bundesliga champions may now be losing a promising young talent. He quickly became a key player for Xabi Alonso’s side, contributing to their successful campaign, though his game time was often limited to appearances from the bench.
Further raising his profile, Alajbegovic was a standout performer for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the recent World Cup, starting all four of his nation’s matches. His inclusion in the starting eleven at such a young age highlighted his potential on the international stage. Kolasinac’s influence in convincing Alajbegovic to join Atalanta is notable, suggesting a strong relationship between the two players and a belief that the Serie A club can offer the right environment for the teenager’s development.
Atalanta, known for their development of young players and attacking style of play, will be hoping Alajbegovic can replicate his form in Italy. The club’s consistent qualification for European competitions also provides an attractive platform for rising stars. Leverkusen will be left to reinvest the €25million fee, potentially seeking a replacement in the January transfer window or during the summer. The transfer could provide Alajbegovic with more consistent first-team football, furthering his progression as a player.
