Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has informed Arsenal that he has no interest in a move to the Premier League club, according to Sky Sports. The Argentina international is a highly sought-after player this summer, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain also vying for his signature.
Alvarez is reportedly seeking a departure from Atletico Madrid, despite the club’s significant investment in the squad, as they have failed to achieve major trophy success. Arsenal, led by manager Mikel Arteta, were keen on re-signing Alvarez, with club official Andrea Berta, who previously signed the player for Atletico, also advocating for the move. However, the player is unwilling to return to England after a previous spell with Manchester City, which ended in 2024.
Barcelona have emerged as the frontrunners for Alvarez’s signature, having already submitted a €100 million bid to Atletico. While Atletico are reluctant to sell to their LaLiga rivals, Alvarez has made his desire to join Barcelona clear, stating he wishes to leave Atletico to “fulfil” his dream. This preference is also influenced by his family’s desire to remain in Spain.
Despite interest from Arsenal and PSG, Sky Sports reports that Alvarez has ruled out moves to both England and France. This stance represents a “major obstacle” for both clubs. Atletico Madrid would reportedly be more open to negotiating a deal with Arsenal or PSG, but Alvarez’s firm preference for Barcelona complicates matters. As it stands, the most likely outcome is that Alvarez will remain at Atletico Madrid for the upcoming season.
Discussions regarding Alvarez’s future are unlikely to progress until after the World Cup, when he returns from holiday and reports for pre-season training with Atletico. Barcelona may consider increasing their offer, but Atletico’s reluctance to strengthen a direct rival remains a significant hurdle. The situation is currently deadlocked, with Alvarez’s unwavering desire to play for Barcelona the key factor.
