Arsenal are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez before the start of their pre-season training on July 20th, according to a report by The Independent. The Gunners are aiming for a busy summer transfer window, having already secured the signings of Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier, and are also in advanced talks for Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis.
Álvarez has emerged as a key target for Mikel Arteta, who views the Argentinian forward as his preferred attacking reinforcement. While Álvarez is said to be open to a move to the Premier League, his initial preference is to remain in Spain, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid also expressing interest. However, Atlético Madrid are reportedly unwilling to strengthen either of their domestic rivals, potentially clearing a path for Arsenal.
Currently under contract with Atlético Madrid, Álvarez has a release clause of €500 million. The Spanish club have previously indicated they have no intention of selling him unless a suitable offer is presented. Álvarez himself publicly expressed his desire to leave the Metropolitano following Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria, stating that a transfer was “the best thing for everyone” and that he wanted to “fulfil my dream.”
The potential arrival of Álvarez could have significant implications for Arsenal’s existing attacking options. Gabriel Jesus is widely expected to be sold this summer, regardless of whether a deal for Álvarez is completed. The futures of Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz are less certain. Havertz’s versatility likely secures his place in the squad unless a substantial bid is received, but Gyokeres could see his playing time limited and may even be considered for a sale if Álvarez joins. Gyokeres impressed during his first season with Arsenal, but would likely fall behind Álvarez in the pecking order.
