Dan-Axel Zagadou is poised to extend his stay with VfB Stuttgart, with an agreement reportedly reached on a new contract until 2027. The news comes despite a challenging 2023-24 season for the French centre-back, which was hampered by recurring muscle injuries.
According to reports in BILD, the contract will be heavily performance-based, with further details, including potential contract options and bonus structures, still under negotiation. The German publication suggests a final agreement could be reached before the end of the current week.
Zagadou initially joined Stuttgart in 2022 following his departure from Borussia Dortmund, where he spent five years. While he showed promise during his time at Dortmund, his career has been frequently interrupted by injuries, a trend that continued in his first season with the Swabians. He made only five appearances across all competitions last season.
Despite his recent injury struggles, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has consistently expressed his faith in Zagadou, viewing him as an important player within the Stuttgart squad. Hoeneß’s continued belief appears to be a significant factor in the club’s willingness to offer the defender a new deal.
The extension for Zagadou provides Stuttgart with added depth in central defence as they prepare for upcoming Bundesliga and potential European campaigns. Securing the 27-year-old signals the club’s commitment to building a competitive squad capable of sustaining its recent positive trajectory.
