Bayern Munich are currently unlikely to make a formal bid for Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli, despite having monitored the Brazilian international, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk. The report comes as Arsenal are reportedly open to selling Martinelli this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid also expressing interest.
Martinelli joined Arsenal from Ituano in 2019 and has become a key player for the Gunners, contributing significantly to their Premier League title challenge this past season. He has made 141 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals. However, concerns over playing time, both at Arsenal and potentially at Bayern, are cited as factors in the German club’s hesitation.
Falk reports that while Thomas Tuchel previously shortlisted Martinelli during his time as Bayern manager, the club are now prioritizing players who are not “big names.” This shift in strategy follows the failed pursuit of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. Bayern are seeking to develop a player in the position rather than acquire an established star, and Falk suggests Martinelli would not be overjoyed with that prospect. A potential fee of €45 million (£38.9m) is considered acceptable by Bayern, but their current focus lies elsewhere.
Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit has publicly stated his belief that Arsenal should sell Martinelli, highlighting the need for stronger, more impactful wingers. Petit emphasized the importance of wingers with both technical skill and pace, suggesting that Martinelli, alongside Gabriel Jesus, may not fully meet those requirements. He also pointed to the need for a faster, more dynamic striker.
The situation suggests Arsenal may be willing to reshape their attacking options during the transfer window, potentially using funds from a Martinelli sale to strengthen other areas of the squad. While Bayern’s interest appears to have cooled, other clubs remain in contention for the Brazilian’s signature, and his future at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain.
