Hennes Behrens has completed a permanent transfer from TSG Hoffenheim to FC Augsburg, both clubs have officially announced. The left-back has signed a contract with Augsburg that will keep him at the club until 2031. The transfer fee is reported to be €3.5 million, with an additional €1 million potentially payable in performance-based bonuses.
Behrens, 21, spent the latter half of the 2023-24 season on loan at 1. FC Heidenheim, where he made a positive impression despite the club’s eventual relegation. He contributed one goal and two assists in 16 appearances for Heidenheim, demonstrating his attacking capabilities from the full-back position. Prior to the loan spell, Behrens had made limited appearances for Hoffenheim’s first team, primarily featuring for their reserve side.
Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that Behrens “already brings valuable Bundesliga experience” despite his young age. Weber also highlighted Behrens’ physical attributes and footballing ability, suggesting he will integrate well into the Augsburg squad. Augsburg finished 12th in the Bundesliga last season and will be hoping Behrens can strengthen their defensive options and provide competition for the starting left-back role.
Hoffenheim, meanwhile, will be looking to reshape their squad under new management. The sale of Behrens represents a modest profit for the club, and allows them to free up space in the squad for potential new signings. Hoffenheim finished 7th in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly missing out on European qualification. The transfer provides Behrens with the opportunity to establish himself as a regular Bundesliga player and further develop his potential at Augsburg.
