Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to leave the club in search of a ‘new challenge’, according to a report by The Athletic. The 20-year-old midfielder has attracted ‘serious interest’ from clubs in both England and across Europe.
Bergvall joined Tottenham with a high reputation, and the club had previously maintained a firm stance that he was ‘unsellable’ as recently as April. However, the Swedish international’s request suggests a change in circumstances, potentially opening the door for a summer transfer. Previous approaches from Arsenal and Chelsea were rebuffed by Spurs, who were not willing to consider a sale at the time.
Aston Villa and Chelsea have again been mentioned as potential suitors, having both previously expressed interest before Tottenham’s unwillingness to negotiate became clear. While links to Arsenal and Liverpool have surfaced previously, their current level of interest is not immediately apparent. Bergvall is currently participating in the World Cup, adding to his profile as a highly-rated player with a contract running until 2031.
Tottenham have been active in the transfer market themselves, recently signing Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke. Allowing Bergvall to depart would free up funds and potentially create space within the squad. A sale would also generate a significant fee for a player who was once considered untouchable. The situation could become more fluid should Enzo Fernandez depart Chelsea, potentially making Bergvall a more attractive option for the Blues.
