Brentford are nearing the completion of a deal to sign Jannik Schuster, the 19-year-old centre-back from RB Salzburg, for a fee of €20 million including add-ons, according to sources. The Bees have opened negotiations for the Austrian defender as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of a potential push for European qualification next season.
Schuster has become a regular in the Salzburg first team this season, making over 25 appearances in both domestic and European competitions. The 6ft 2in defender progressed through the Salzburg academy, initially featuring for their feeder side, FC Liefering, before establishing himself in the senior squad. He is known for his versatility, being comfortable playing on either side of central defence, and his ball-playing ability which aligns with Brentford’s progressive style of play.
Capped at Austria Under-21 level, Schuster represents a long-term investment for Brentford, a club with a proven track record of developing young players into Premier League performers. However, Brentford face competition from other Premier League clubs, with Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion also expressing interest in the player. TEAMtalk reports that Brighton may make a move in the coming week.
Schuster’s market value has reportedly risen sharply, from an estimated €3.5 million, reflecting his consistent performances in the Austrian Bundesliga. West Ham United have also been linked with a move, but are not currently considered to be leading the chase. The potential signing would be another example of Brentford’s astute recruitment strategy, identifying and acquiring promising talent from across Europe.
Schuster’s combination of physical presence and technical skills makes him well-suited to the demands of the Premier League, though he will likely need time to adjust to the league’s intensity. The opportunity to play in Europe is also believed to be a motivating factor for the player, with Brentford increasingly likely to qualify for European competition based on their current league position. The transfer window is now open, and the deal could be completed swiftly.
