Olympique de Marseille have signed defender Maureen Cosson on a free transfer from FC Nantes, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract with the Provençal side, bolstering their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season.
Cosson arrives at Marseille following three seasons with Nantes, where she also served as captain until the expiration of her contract. Her departure from Nantes was officially announced earlier in the day by the club. The move sees her reunite with Nicolas Chabot, her former manager at Nantes, who recently took charge of the Marseille women’s team.
The transfer is intended to fill the void left by the departures of Ninon Blanchard and Marta Carro, both of whom were key figures in Marseille’s defense. The club are clearly prioritizing strengthening their backline following those exits. According to reports, the connection between Nantes and Marseille may not end with Cosson, with Louise Fleury and Nelly da Cruz Rodrigues also potential targets for a move to the south of France.
Cosson has spent over a decade playing in France, beginning her career with La Roche-sur-Yon before joining Nantes. She is known for her defensive solidity and leadership qualities. The question of who will be appointed captain remains open, following the departure of Tess Laplacette, but Cosson will be a strong contender given her experience as a captain at Nantes. This signing represents a significant step in Marseille’s efforts to build a competitive squad under their new manager.
