Ederson has signed a new five-year contract with Atalanta, bringing an end to a protracted transfer saga that saw him come close to joining Manchester United. The news was confirmed by the Italian club on Friday, July 18th, after a dramatic summer that initially saw Ederson announced as a signing for United under new manager Michael Carrick, only for the deal to subsequently collapse.
Manchester United had been prepared to meet Ederson’s €40 million release clause and had already agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old midfielder. However, following extensive medical examinations in England, concerns were raised regarding the condition of his knee, leading United to withdraw from the transfer. Reports suggested the possibility of revisiting the deal later in the summer if Ederson’s condition improved, but this did not materialise.
Despite the setback, Ederson’s qualities would have added a new dimension to United’s midfield. Carrick had already brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a combined fee approaching €100 million, but Ederson’s mobility was seen as a valuable asset. United may have been willing to negotiate a lower transfer fee to account for the risk associated with his knee.
Atalanta released a statement confirming the extension, highlighting the successful four-year relationship with the player and expressing their confidence in his future contributions. The club stated their wish for Ederson to continue his journey with the Nerazzurri, following their 2024 Europa League triumph.
Manchester United are now focusing on alternative central midfield targets. While the initial expectation was to sign a high-profile player, recent reports suggest they may pursue more affordable options. Carrick is seeking to bolster the midfield following a third-place finish last season, aiming to add energy and dynamism to compete for the Premier League title. Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin has been linked as a potential budget-friendly addition, with Atalanta also reportedly interested in the Belgium international. The club’s search continues, but Ederson will not be a part of their plans.
