Chelsea have initiated discussions with Xabi Alonso regarding the possibility of the former Real Madrid manager becoming their next permanent head coach, according to TEAMtalk. While Alonso is a key target, the club is also evaluating seven other candidates for the position at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid mid-season and is now actively seeking a return to the touchline. He was previously linked with a return to Liverpool, where he enjoyed a successful playing career, but the Spaniard has indicated his openness to exploring other opportunities, particularly as Liverpool are currently expected to continue with Arne Slot.
Chelsea’s sporting leadership group reportedly believe Alonso is an ideal fit for the club’s long-term structure, recruitment model, and preferred style of play. Initial conversations between the two parties are said to have been positive, with Chelsea impressed by Alonso’s ideas, personality, and vision for developing the squad.
Alongside Alonso, Chelsea are also considering Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who remains a ‘dream appointment’ for the club, though securing his release from the national team is considered difficult. Matthias Jaissle, the Saudi Arabia-based coach, is also highly regarded, with some within Chelsea referring to him as “the new Nagelsmann” due to his tactical flexibility.
Former Chelsea players Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis are also part of the assessment process, viewed as promising young coaches with long-term potential. Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, both expected to be available this summer, are also in contention, as is Fulham’s Marco Silva.
Despite the extensive shortlist, Alonso has reportedly made a strong early impression, and Chelsea believe his profile aligns with their desired direction. His track record of developing young players and implementing an attractive style of play are seen as significant assets. No final decision has been made, but Alonso is now considered a leading contender for the role.
