Manchester United are preparing to accelerate their pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the possibility of a transfer hinging on the London club’s Premier League status, according to reports. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, is reportedly keen to finalize a deal quickly, though they face competition from reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Fernandes has been a standout performer for West Ham in a challenging season, currently sitting in the relegation zone with three games remaining. Despite the team’s struggles, the 21-year-old has consistently impressed in midfield, becoming a key player for the Hammers. United have been monitoring Fernandes closely throughout the season, with their interest growing in recent weeks, as they seek to bolster their midfield options.
United are planning significant midfield investment this summer, anticipating the departure of Casemiro and potentially Manuel Ugarte. While Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was initially a top target, his £100-120 million valuation may prove prohibitive. This has led the club to explore alternative options, including Fernandes, who was previously considered last summer before West Ham’s relegation rivals Southampton went down.
West Ham are currently attempting to block any sales of their key players, including Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, and Jarrod Bowen. However, relegation would likely force their hand, making it difficult to retain their star assets. Fernandes himself has publicly expressed admiration for United captain Bruno Fernandes, citing him as a role model and someone he studies closely. He stated to O Jogo earlier this season that Bruno is “the biggest one [role model] right now” and that he tries to learn from him.
PSG have also registered their interest in Fernandes, with representatives already in contact with the player, who recently earned his first senior cap for Portugal. United will need to act swiftly to secure his signature, given the competition and Fernandes’ potential appeal to a European powerhouse. A successful transfer could see Fernandes partner with his idol, Bruno Fernandes, in the United midfield next season.
