Manchester United have identified Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni as a ‘dream’ target in their search for midfield reinforcements, but face significant obstacles in securing his signature, according to Fabrizio Romano. The news comes as United seek to replace Casemiro and address the situation following the apparent unavailability of Atalanta’s Ederson, who is nearing a £43million move to the club.
United had allocated up to £100million for a holding midfielder, initially prioritizing Elliot Anderson, though Manchester City are now considered favourites to sign the Englishman. Tchouameni emerged as an alternative, with his profile – a defensively solid, goal-capable international – appealing to the Old Trafford hierarchy. The club believes he could seamlessly fill the void left by Casemiro.
However, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly stated his firm intention to retain Tchouameni this summer, despite previous reports of internal disagreements within the squad. Perez’s comments were relayed by Romano, who also noted that Tchouameni himself publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the club and winning titles with Real Madrid. This stance casts significant doubt on any potential move to Manchester.
Further complicating a deal are financial considerations, with Tchouameni currently earning a substantial salary. While United are willing to invest, matching his current wages presents a challenge. The club has also been linked with West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as alternative options, with reports suggesting Tonali’s availability may hinge on factors at Newcastle. Arsenal were also reported to have made contact with Tchouameni’s representatives in April and May, highlighting the widespread interest in the player.
The situation leaves Manchester United in a potentially difficult position as they attempt to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season. While Tchouameni represents an ideal profile, Real Madrid’s resolve and the player’s own statements suggest a transfer is unlikely at this time.
