Manchester United have emerged as the preferred destination for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to reports. The 21-year-old Portuguese international impressed despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, earning interest from several top European clubs including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Liverpool.
West Ham have reportedly set an asking price of £85 million for Fernandes, reflecting his importance to the team and potential for further development. While Real Madrid were also considering a move, reporter Shaun Connolly claims Fernandes has indicated a preference for joining Manchester United.
The potential transfer is being aided by Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, who has a pre-existing relationship with Fernandes. Before joining Manchester United in April 2024, Wilcox was instrumental in laying the groundwork for Fernandes’ move from Sporting CP to Southampton, identifying him as a player with significant Premier League potential. He has continued to follow Fernandes’ progress and remained impressed with his performances for West Ham.
Sources suggest Wilcox has maintained contact with Fernandes’ representatives, strengthening United’s position in the negotiations. The club is planning significant changes to its midfield this summer, and Fernandes is viewed as a key component of the team’s future. This established rapport could prove decisive in securing Fernandes’ signature, especially as United present a compelling sporting project to the player. The move would address a need for midfield reinforcements following Ederson’s arrival, and potentially a further addition.
Should Fernandes complete a move to Old Trafford, it would represent a significant coup for Manchester United, adding a dynamic and promising young talent to their squad.
