Brazilian club Flamengo has initiated legal proceedings against former midfielder Gerson and his agency, FGM Sports, headed by his father, according to reports from ESPN Brasil. The dispute stems from accusations that Gerson reached an agreement with Zenit Saint Petersburg before officially terminating his contract with Flamengo.
Flamengo also alleges that Gerson breached an image rights contract that was in place until 2030, claiming this was a violation of his contractual obligations. The club is seeking 42.7 million reais, which translates to approximately 7 million euros, in damages from the player and his agency. Gerson originally played for Flamengo between 2019 and 2021, and then rejoined the club for a second spell from 2023 to 2025 before departing for Cruzeiro.
Gerson’s time at Flamengo was marked by periods of strong form and he served as captain for the club. His departure was reportedly not well-received by Flamengo’s hierarchy, leading to the current legal battle. The player currently plays for Cruzeiro in the Brazilian Serie A, having completed a permanent transfer after his contract with Flamengo was dissolved.
The legal action taken by Flamengo highlights the increasing scrutiny of player agreements and potential conflicts of interest in modern football. Should Flamengo be successful in their claim, it could set a precedent for similar cases involving players negotiating with other clubs while still under contract. This situation also underscores the importance of carefully structured contracts and adherence to agreed-upon terms in player transfers.
