- FC Union Berlin have confirmed the signing of Marvin Friedrich on a free transfer, bringing the centre-back back to the club after a spell with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The 30-year-old joins Union as a free agent with his contract at Mönchengladbach expiring at the end of June, marking a return to the capital where he previously played between January 2018 and January 2022.
Friedrich expressed his delight at rejoining Union, stating that the move feels like “coming home” and highlighting his significant development during his first stint with the club, both professionally and personally. He also emphasized the special connection he maintains with the club, the fans, and the city of Berlin.
Union Berlin’s director of men’s professional football, Horst Heldt, welcomed Friedrich back, emphasizing his existing knowledge of the club’s values and his proven leadership qualities. Heldt stated that Friedrich will immediately add stability to the team with his experience, mentality, and presence.
Friedrich’s departure from Mönchengladbach came after a period where he struggled to consistently hold down a starting position. He made 27 appearances across all competitions for the Foals, but his role was often rotational, and he wasn’t always a fixture in the starting eleven.
During his previous time at Union, Friedrich established himself as a key player, contributing significantly to their rise through the German football pyramid. He played a vital role in their promotion to the Bundesliga and subsequent establishment as a top-flight team. His return is seen as a boost to Union’s defensive options as they prepare for another Bundesliga campaign.
The move represents a shrewd piece of business for Union, securing a familiar and experienced player without a transfer fee. It also provides Friedrich with the opportunity to rediscover his best form in a familiar environment, potentially solidifying his place as a key figure in the Union squad.
