Olivier Giroud has expressed his support for Kylian Mbappé to continue breaking records for the French national team, following Mbappé surpassing his own goalscoring record. Mbappé became France’s all-time leading scorer on Tuesday evening against Senegal, moving ahead of Giroud with 58 goals. The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored a brace in the match, cementing his place in French football history.
Giroud, who previously held the record with 57 goals, spoke to Le Parisien, stating his delight that Mbappé had surpassed his tally. He described it as “inevitable” and “the logical progression,” predicting that Mbappé will continue to break records throughout his career. The veteran striker acknowledged the natural order of things, acknowledging Mbappé’s talent and potential.
Currently 27 years old, Mbappé is enjoying a prolific period in his career, and Giroud believes he has many more seasons at the peak of his powers. He went on to express his wish for Mbappé to score at least 50 more goals, surpassing the 100-goal milestone. This would further solidify his legacy as one of France’s greatest ever players.
Giroud recently extended his contract with Lille, and appears to be focused on his own career while simultaneously celebrating the achievements of his compatriot. Mbappé’s next target is Hugo Lloris’ record of 145 caps for France, a feat that would require sustained fitness and continued selection over the coming years. The focus now shifts to how many records Mbappé can accumulate during his career, with Giroud clearly believing the number will be substantial.
