Arsenal have been linked with a potential swap deal involving Viktor Gyokeres and Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, but club legend Thierry Henry has cautioned against allowing Gyokeres to depart. According to Spanish outlet Cope, Atletico are exploring a deal that would see Alvarez and Gyokeres exchange clubs, with Arsenal also contributing a fee of between €40-60 million.
Gyokeres enjoyed a successful debut season with Arsenal, scoring 21 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions. The Swede has established himself as a key player for Mikel Arteta, offering a physical presence and goal threat up front. Alvarez, meanwhile, is highly regarded as one of the most complete forwards in world football, capable of pressing, creating, scoring, and playing between the lines.
Henry believes that while Alvarez would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Arsenal squad, losing Gyokeres would alter the team’s identity. He argued that great teams add quality to quality, rather than simply replacing it, and that the dream scenario would be to have both players in the same squad. Henry emphasized Gyokeres’ unique attributes – power, presence, and aggression – which make him a difficult opponent for defenders.
The financial aspect of the deal could prove to be a stumbling block, as Atletico are unlikely to let Alvarez leave for a reduced fee. If Arsenal are unwilling to meet Atletico’s valuation, the transfer may not materialize. The potential deal highlights Arsenal’s ambition to strengthen their attacking options, but also the importance of retaining key players who have already proven their worth. The club are also reportedly considering moves for Sandro Tonali and Morgan Rogers this summer, each expected to cost over £90 million.
Ultimately, the decision rests with Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy, who must weigh the benefits of acquiring a world-class talent like Alvarez against the potential loss of a proven goalscorer in Gyokeres.
