Manchester United have entered the competition to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, according to journalist Marcos Duran. The development comes after Alvarez indicated his desire to leave the Spanish club, stating that a transfer is “the best thing for everyone” following discussions with Atletico officials.
Alvarez has been a target for several top European clubs, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid recently submitted a bid of €150 million for the 26-year-old, which was immediately rejected by Atletico, who are reportedly seeking a fee of €200 million or his €500 million release clause.
Despite central midfield being identified as a priority this summer, United have reportedly “spoken directly with the player’s agents” and are prepared to challenge for Alvarez’s signature. The club’s return to the Champions League and financial capacity are cited as factors in their renewed pursuit of a high-profile forward. This move comes after United missed out on signing Elliot Anderson, reportedly motivating them to make a statement signing.
Alvarez has been described as a “world-class striker” by Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsi and would represent a significant upgrade to potential targets such as Benjamin Sesko. However, questions remain about whether United can afford to invest heavily in both a midfielder and a forward this transfer window. Alternative striker options, including Jean-Philippe Mateta and a potential reunion with Danny Welbeck, have also been considered. Victor Osimhen remains a dream target, but his £130 million price tag presents a significant obstacle.
While United’s interest has emerged, Alvarez is still reportedly favouring a move to Barcelona, and the Catalan club are working to structure a bid. Arsenal remain in contention should a deal with Barcelona fall through. The situation remains fluid, with several clubs vying for the Argentine’s signature.
