Borussia Dortmund winger Cole Campbell will return to the Bundesliga club after TSG Hoffenheim opted not to exercise their purchase option following a six-month loan spell. The decision, confirmed by Hoffenheim on Tuesday, means the 20-year-old will not be making a permanent move to the Sinsheim-based outfit.
Campbell joined Hoffenheim in January seeking more regular first-team football, but he made only five appearances for the club during his time there. His limited involvement appears to have dissuaded Hoffenheim from pursuing a permanent deal, despite his contract with Dortmund running until 2028.
Despite the unsuccessful spell in Hoffenheim, Campbell’s future remains a topic of discussion, with Celtic now emerging as potential suitors. Sky Germany reports that the Scottish champions are currently in talks with Borussia Dortmund regarding a possible transfer for the American youth international.
Campbell progressed through the Borussia Dortmund youth system, signing his first professional contract with the club in 2024. He has featured sporadically for Dortmund’s first team, primarily as a substitute, and the loan to Hoffenheim was intended to provide him with valuable experience. However, a lack of opportunities in Germany has prompted Dortmund to consider other options.
Celtic, currently managed by Brendan Rodgers, are consistently looking to bolster their squad with young, promising talent. A move to Glasgow could offer Campbell a more prominent role and a chance to develop his game in a competitive environment. The potential transfer could provide Celtic with additional attacking options as they aim to maintain their dominance in Scottish football.
