TSG Hoffenheim have announced a long-term contract extension for head coach Christian Ilzer, the club confirmed on Friday. The length of the new deal was not disclosed by the Sinsheim-based club.
Ilzer assumed the role of head coach in November 2024, inheriting a team involved in a relegation battle. He quickly turned the club’s fortunes around, guiding them to a European competition qualifying position. Last season, Hoffenheim secured their second-highest points total in Bundesliga history, accumulating 61 points.
Sporting Director Andreas Schicker praised Ilzer’s impact, stating that the coach has elevated the team to a new level. Schicker highlighted Ilzer’s clear footballing vision, emphasis on high intensity, and modern leadership style as key attributes. He also noted the coach’s ability to develop young players and increase the club’s market value.
Prior to joining Hoffenheim, Ilzer managed Sturm Graz in Austria, where he achieved notable success, including winning the Austrian Bundesliga title in the 2021-22 season. His appointment at Hoffenheim was seen as a bold move, given his relative inexperience in the Bundesliga, but he has quickly proven his capabilities.
The extension solidifies Hoffenheim’s commitment to Ilzer’s project and signals their ambition to continue challenging at the upper end of the Bundesliga table. This long-term stability provides a platform for sustained growth and continued player development within the club.
