Charlotte FC are currently the frontrunners to sign James Tavernier, the recently departed Rangers captain, according to TEAMtalk. The 34-year-old full-back is weighing up offers from multiple clubs, including Newcastle United, following his exit from the Scottish Premiership.
While interest exists from England and Turkey, a move to Major League Soccer is proving increasingly appealing to Tavernier. Charlotte head coach Dean Smith is known to be a long-time admirer of the player and is actively pursuing his signature to bolster the squad for the remainder of the season.
Several Turkish clubs – Istanbul Basaksehir, Kasimpasa and Amedspor – have also held discussions regarding a potential transfer, and remain in contention. Back in England, Newcastle United have explored the possibility of bringing Tavernier back to the Premier League, his former club. Everton and Aston Villa have also made enquiries, viewing him as an experienced addition capable of providing leadership and versatility.
However, any significant move from those Premier League sides is likely to be delayed until later in the transfer window as they further assess their squad needs and potential outgoings. West Ham United have also expressed interest, contingent on the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Championship clubs Burnley and Derby County have also held talks with Tavernier’s representatives.
Despite the widespread interest, Charlotte FC currently hold the strongest position, with the opportunity to work with Dean Smith and the appeal of a new challenge in MLS proving attractive. Negotiations are ongoing, and no final decision has been made, but Charlotte are best placed to secure Tavernier’s signature as of today.
Tavernier spent a successful period with Rangers, becoming a key player and captain, but the club are already looking at potential replacements, including Hammarby right-back, according to reports. Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with a move for Tavernier as part of a potential double defender deal.
