Borussia Mönchengladbach are prepared to sell Giovanni Reyna for a fee lower than the €4 million they paid Borussia Dortmund for his services last summer, according to a report in Sport Bild. The 23-year-old United States international has struggled to make a significant impact since joining Die Fohlen, making 20 appearances across all competitions and contributing only one goal and one assist.
Reyna himself acknowledged his disappointment with his first season in Mönchengladbach, telling Sport Bild that he was not entirely satisfied with his playing time. He noted an upturn in form towards the end of the campaign, but also indicated his focus remains on performing well for the USMNT. The midfielder’s situation has been further complicated by projections that he will not be a central figure for Gladbach in the upcoming 2026/27 season.
Reyna joined Mönchengladbach hoping to reignite his career after a somewhat fractured spell at Dortmund, where injuries and inconsistent opportunities hampered his progress. He had initially emerged as a promising talent in Dortmund’s youth system, making his Bundesliga debut in 2019 and becoming a regular squad member. However, a series of muscular injuries disrupted his momentum, limiting his game time and preventing him from fully establishing himself as a key player.
Despite his club situation, Reyna recently made a positive contribution for the United States at the Copa América, scoring after coming on as a substitute in their opening 4-1 victory against Paraguay. However, he is still anticipated to begin on the bench for Friday’s match against Australia. Gladbach’s willingness to accept a fee below their initial investment suggests they are prioritizing squad reshaping and may be seeking to recoup funds following a disappointing return from the player.
Should Reyna impress during the remainder of the Copa América, Gladbach may reconsider their position, but currently, a quick sale appears to be the most likely outcome. This could open up opportunities for Reyna to find a club where he can secure more consistent playing time and fully realize his potential.
